The Bundestag is demanding the renaming of streets

The Bundestag is demanding the renaming of streets named after Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and officials of the German Democratic Republic.

Axar.az reports, citing Bild, that Bundestag members noted that in several eastern cities, there are still streets named after Lenin, officials of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, and even the “German-Soviet Friendship” movement. They proposed that these streets be renamed, but local authorities are resisting.

It was reported that in the former territory of the German Democratic Republic, more than ten streets still bear Lenin’s name.

They argue that there should be no streets in Germany named after Lenin, Otto Grotewohl, or Wilhelm Pieck, as these names symbolize the suffering of thousands of victims:

“However, in some residential areas, municipal authorities oppose this, and the matter has gone to court.”
