Supreme Court blocks Trump’s global tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by imposing sweeping global tariffs under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that Chief Justice John Roberts, joined by two conservative justices appointed by Trump and the three liberal justices, wrote that the law did not grant the president the power to impose tariffs.

The decision marks a rare check on Trump after a year in which the Court had largely sided with him in emergency cases, including on immigration, military service, federal employment, and agency control. Trump reacted angrily, calling some of his own appointees “fools” and “lapdogs” for Democrats.

Legal experts say the ruling demonstrates the Court’s willingness to police the scope of presidential power, even for a conservative-majority bench, and underscores that Trump cannot bypass Congress to pursue major policy initiatives.
