Major forest fire breaks out in western Turkiye

A wildfire that broke out on agricultural land in Turkiye's western Izmir province spread into a nearby forest on Monday, with strong winds pushing the flames close to residential areas.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that the fire started at 2:05 p.m. local time in the Yaylayurt area of Dikili district before quickly spreading to woodland.

Firefighters launched an initial response within five minutes.

The Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry deployed seven firefighting aircraft, eight helicopters, 35 fire engines and four bulldozers to contain the blaze, while additional ground crews were sent to the area.

In Candarli neighborhood, the fire advanced to the vicinity of the Pelin Site and Zeynep Kesan Evleri residential complexes as strong winds fueled the flames.

More than 30 firefighting teams, including units from the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, along with dozens of water tankers, continued battling the fire from the air and ground to prevent further spread.
