A massive avalanche struck the Himlung Himal base camp in western Nepal on Sunday, burying tents and leaving at least 10 people missing.

Axar.az reports, citing Nepali media, that the avalanche occurred after continuous rain and heavy snowfall in the area.

According to expedition organizers, eight climbers and support staff from Himalayan Holidays Nepal and two kitchen staff from Imagine Nepal Treks lost contact after the avalanche swept through the base camp.

The Expedition Operators Association Nepal said most members and staff of other companies operating in the area had already descended to lower elevations safely following weather warnings.
