The co-pilot of flydubai flight FZ1073 attempted to carry out a “terrorist” attack during the flight, the United Emirates prosecutor general said on Saturday.
Axar.az reports, citing Al Arabiya, that the co-pilot was identified as Hammam al-Hammami, an Omani national. UAE authorities did not immediately comment on his identity.
The co-pilot attacked the pilot inside the cockpit with a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft, the prosecutor general said.
A crash axe is typically kept in the cockpit for use during emergencies.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident, the motives and any related connections, as well as to examine physical and digital evidence, he added.
It should be noted that flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv operated on September 30. During the flight, a fight broke out between the captain and the co-pilot in the cockpit, after which crew members and passengers intervened. The aircraft diverted from its route and made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Several crew members were injured.
During the incident, the aircraft briefly lost more than 16,000 feet in altitude. The injured captain managed to open the cockpit door, after which passengers and other pilots on board helped restrain the attacker. The aircraft subsequently landed safely in Tabuk.
Following the incident, flydubai temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel.
