U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for strengthening the transatlantic alliance between the United States and Europe, saying the partnership must remain united in the face of emerging threats.
Axar.az reports, citing foreign media, that Rubio made the remarks during a speech at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
“Though passions may, at times, have strained the bonds of affection between the United States and Europe, it must not be allowed to break them. Together, we must strengthen an alliance capable of confronting the threats of our age,” Rubio said.
He stressed that the transatlantic relationship should not be viewed as a zero-sum partnership, saying the United States and Europe can achieve greater strength by working together.
“Our vision is of an alliance whose strength is greater than the sum of its parts,” Rubio said, pointing to an unprecedented agreement reached last month between the United States, Denmark and Greenland.
According to Rubio, the agreement will reshape the Arctic and bolster the security of all NATO members.
“All three partners in that deal emerged victorious. All of Europe – and NATO and the United States – emerged safer, stronger, and more secure because of it,” he said.
“We want to win together. We must win together,” Rubio added.
