Japan may open debate on nuclear-powered submarines

Japan may refer to nuclear-powered submarines in revised key security documents by year-end, possibly identifying them as a subject for further research and debate as the country seeks to bolster deterrence.

Axar.az reports, citing The Mainichi, that some ruling coalition lawmakers want Japan to consider acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, but the issue remains sensitive. Any reference to such vessels in the documents would likely stop short of suggesting that Japan has decided to acquire them, the sources said.

The idea has emerged within the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as work continues to revise the three key documents underpinning the country's defense and security policies.

"If we state that issues related to nuclear-powered submarines will be considered, it will make it easier to hold more concrete discussions irrespective of whether such vessels will be acquired," a government source said.
