The European Union may consider revoking the visa-free regime with Georgia in light of the further decline of democracy in the country.
Axar.az reports that this information was reported by the newspaper "Politico," citing a representative of the European Commission.
The source noted that the EU is discussing all options, including a possible temporary suspension of visa liberalization: "As part of the dialogue on visa liberalization and the relevant action plan between the EU and Georgia, the Georgian authorities were required to fulfill certain conditions, including the protection of citizens' fundamental rights and preventing discrimination among certain groups of the population.
Of course, if such a development poses a threat to the internal security of the Schengen area, and if democracy further weakens in Georgia, an appropriate assessment will be conducted."
It should be noted that under the agreement signed in 2017, Georgian citizens are allowed to stay in EU countries visa-free for up to six months.
