Turkiye, experiencing the driest period of the last 52 years, will face serious problems in the drinking water supply of Ankara and Istanbul.
Axar.az informs that this was reported by Posta newspaper, citing Ceyhun Özçelik, an associate professor at Muğla University.
“In the first nine months of 2025, the driest period of the last 52 years has been recorded in Turkiye. The amount of precipitation has decreased by 26% compared to the seasonal norm. Although 520 millimeters of rainfall per square meter were expected to fall on the country this year, only about 380 millimeters have fallen. In Central Anatolia, this ratio is around 36%, while in the Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean regions, the rainfall deficit is around 30%. A 26% rainfall deficit over nine months means that agricultural production across the country will be significantly affected,” Özçelik stated.
According to him, in settlements and megacities with faulty urban infrastructure and a lack or absence of water reservoirs, major problems with the drinking water supply are inevitable.
