Today, Catholics around the world celebrate Christmas.
Axar.az reports that Christmas, considered one of the most significant and grand ceremonies in Christianity, is traditionally celebrated to honor the birth of Jesus Christ in the city of Bethlehem.
Christians worldwide observe this holiday on different dates (December 25 and January 6-7) based on their denominations. It is currently recognized as an official state holiday in over 100 countries.
In many countries with a predominantly Christian population, Christmas is a public holiday. However, in nations like India and Malaysia, where Christians are not the majority, it is still marked as an official day-off.
In most countries celebrating Christmas, stores are closed on this day. For example, in England, no public transportation operates on December 25.
One of the most iconic symbols of Christmas is "Santa Claus," also known as Father Christmas, whose character is inspired by St. Nicholas, a 4th-century saint.
In many foreign countries, preparations for the holiday begin months in advance and are carried out with great enthusiasm and pomp. During this period, homes and public spaces are adorned with Christmas trees, and streets are illuminated. The tradition of decorating Christmas trees is believed to have originated in Germany in the 16th century and later spread to Europe.
A traditional Christmas dinner often features turkey and vegetables. However, the holiday meals vary across cultures, reflecting local customs. For instance, in Sicily, the table is adorned with 12 types of fish. In the United Kingdom and countries influenced by its traditions, dishes such as turkey, goose, broth, potatoes, and vegetables are common. Special desserts like Christmas pudding, sweet cookies, and fruit cakes are also prepared.
In Azerbaijan, prayers are held annually at the Catholic Church during Christmas. President Ilham Aliyev extends greetings to Catholics on this occasion each year.
