Trump envisions U.S.-controlled Gaza, calls it future ‘Riviera’

In a surprise announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed that the U.S. take over the Gaza Strip, develop it economically, and resettle its over two million Palestinian residents in neighboring countries. This plan contradicts decades of U.S. policy supporting a two-state solution, with Gaza as part of a future Palestinian state.

Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that Trump described Gaza as a "demolition site" and suggested transforming it into the "Riviera of the Middle East." He provided no details on how the U.S. would assume control or where displaced Palestinians would be permanently resettled.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump’s "fresh ideas" without committing to the proposal. The plan drew immediate condemnation from Democratic lawmakers, Arab states, and Palestinian groups, with Hamas labeling it an "expulsion" attempt. Saudi Arabia reiterated its stance against displacing Palestinians and insisted on the establishment of a Palestinian state before normalizing ties with Israel.

Trump’s proposal also sparked fears of renewed chaos, with critics comparing it to imperialist rhetoric. Experts believe it could destabilize U.S. relations in the region and contradict international law regarding forced displacement.
