Wearing glasses is often linked to being clever – but it turns out there may well be some truth to the myth after all. Researchers analysed the health and intelligence of more than 300,000 people in a bid to determine whether any links could be made.

The team from the University of Edinburgh found ‘genetic overlap’ between ‘general cognitive function, reaction time, and many health variables including eyesight, hypertension, and longevity’. People with poor vision had particularly striking results, according to the researchers. More intelligent participants were found to be nearly 30% more likely to have genes associated with needing glasses.

However, the researchers said there was no proof of a defined link between the two factors. Previous studies have determined that someone wearing glasses is perceived to be more attractive by other people.
It was also established that intelligence has links to health benefits – people who were found to be less intelligent were more likely to be in poor health, the team found. The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.
