Ukraine’s fate hangs in the balance in Munich

As global leaders gather at the Munich Security Conference, prospects for ending the war in Ukraine remain stalled nearly four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion, Politico reported.

Axar.az reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are among those attending. But European officials say they expect few concrete breakthroughs beyond public displays of unity.

The Trump administration has made clear it will not finalize long-term security guarantees for Ukraine until Kyiv and Moscow reach a broader peace agreement. The central obstacle remains territory: Russia insists on full control of the Donbas region, while Ukraine refuses to cede additional land beyond current battle lines.

Further U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian talks are expected soon, possibly in Miami or Abu Dhabi, but recent negotiations have failed to resolve core disputes, including territorial control and whether Western troops would be deployed to secure a settlement.
