The Ombudsman of Azerbaijan has issued a statement regarding Iran’s drone attack on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Axar.az reports the statement strongly condemned the deliberate attack targeting civilian facilities, which resulted in injuries to civilians.
The Ombudsman called on the international community to respond to this act of terror.
It was noted that any attack targeting the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes a gross violation of international law and international humanitarian law, particularly the norms of the Geneva Conventions. Such acts contradict the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, as well as the principles of good neighborliness, and must not be repeated.
“As the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, I would like to emphasize that protecting the life and health of civilians is a fundamental obligation for all states. It is essential that this incident be thoroughly investigated as soon as possible in accordance with international law, that the facts be clarified, those responsible be held accountable, and necessary measures be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the statement said.
The Ombudsman also stressed that respect for the sovereign rights of states and the protection of civilians and civilian facilities are among the fundamental obligations of every member state under the UN Charter.
It should be noted that drone attacks were carried out from Iran toward Nakhchivan around midday on March 5. One of the drones struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another fell near a school building in the village of Shakarabad. As a result, four people were injured.
