A military confrontation or escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not currently on the agenda.
Axar.az reports that this was stated by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with Germany’s Berliner Zeitung newspaper.
According to him, work is ongoing toward signing a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia:
“Sometimes countries sign a peace agreement on paper, but real peace does not exist. In the South Caucasus, the opposite is true – real peace exists. A military confrontation or escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not on the agenda. Some disputed issues remain – and that is entirely normal. That’s what diplomacy and dialogue are for.”
The presidential aide added that Azerbaijan is ready for peace and regional transformation:
“The text of the peace treaty prepared by Baku and presented to Armenia has largely been agreed upon. This is a very positive development. Yes, there are still some unresolved details. For example, Armenia’s Constitution includes territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Every country’s Constitution is its internal matter – as long as it does not reference another country’s name or territory. We want to sign this peace treaty not only with the Armenian government but also with the Armenian people. We would like to see the Armenian Constitution amended to officially renounce claims to Azerbaijani territories.”
To the question “So the issue is not only about the Armenian Constitution?”, Hajiyev replied:
“Once this issue is resolved, we believe there will no longer be serious obstacles on the path to peace.”
