Iran to boycott 2026 World Cup

Iran has announced that it is boycotting the draw for the 2026 World Cup finals.

Axar.az informs that foreign media outlets have reported on this.

According to the information, the reason for Tehran's decision was the US government's refusal to issue visas to several members of the official delegation from Iran, including the head of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj.

"We have already informed FIFA that the decision has nothing to do with sports and that members of the Iranian delegation will not participate in the draw for the World Cup," a representative of the Iranian Football Association said.

It should be noted that the draw for the World Cup will be held in Washington on December 5. Despite boycotting the draw, the Iranian national team will participate in the 2026 World Cup. The world's most prestigious sports tournament will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
