Rosatom says it will stay in Iran despite war

The head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, said the state corporation does not intend to stop construction of the second and third power units at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant or leave Iran.

Axar.az informs, citing Interfax, “The construction itself — the second and third units — remains among the corporation’s priorities. It is definitely not the time to leave,” he said.

The first power unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, with a capacity of 1,000 MW, was handed over to the Iranian customer in 2013. Construction of the second stage (units II and III with a combined capacity of 2.1 GW) began in 2016. Work on the second unit was planned to be completed in 2024, and on the third unit in 2026.

In late February 2025, Likhachev also said that a site had been selected for another Russian-designed nuclear power plant in Iran, although construction there is still a long way off.
