Baghaei: Key ceasefire clause remains unfulfilled

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has said Tehran’s delegation is travelling to Switzerland to press the United States on its commitments and clarify how Washington intends to fulfill its obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding.

Axar.az reports, citing IRIB News Agency, Baghaei emphasized that under Clause 13 of the memorandum, the start of Iran–US negotiations on a final agreement depends on the initiation and continuation of commitments outlined in Clauses 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11.

He said this condition has not yet been met due to what Iran describes as non-compliance by the other side, adding that the purpose of the visit is to demand clarity on implementation.

According to him, Clause 1 of the memorandum — which calls for a cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon — is the core of the agreement.

Baghaei stated that while Iran has fulfilled its obligations, the opposing side was expected to ensure a ceasefire by the Israeli side in Lebanon, but has failed to do so, which Tehran considers a violation of the understanding.

He also noted that although some steps have been taken regarding the lifting of a naval blockade and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the memorandum remains a “single package,” warning that any breach of Clause 1 puts the entire agreement at risk and could seriously jeopardize the process.

It should be noted that the next round of US-Iran talks is expected to take place in Switzerland on June 21.
