Donald Trump reportedly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for advice on whether the U.S. should provide military aid to Ukraine during their first in-person meeting in Hamburg in 2017.

Axar.az reports that according to The New York Times, Trump questioned Putin on the matter, to which the Russian leader responded that aiding Ukraine would be a mistake, warning that Ukraine would keep asking for more. Trump did not push back on Putin's stance.

This meeting occurred just seven months into Trump's presidency, three years after Russia's annexation of Crimea. Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson attended the meeting and later told aides that Trump was "out-prepared" by Putin, who tried to influence Trump's approach to Ukraine. Despite Trump's past claims of having a strong relationship with Putin, critics argue that Putin exploited Trump's political stance against Ukraine.
