Azerbaijan, Iran discuss joint environmental projects

On November 13, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with the Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Chairwoman of Iran's Environmental Protection Organization, Mrs. Shina Ansari.

Axar.az reports that Shina Ansari congratulated President Aliyev on the hosting of COP29 in Azerbaijan and conveyed the greetings of Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian.

President Ilham Aliyev thanked her for the greetings and requested that his greetings be passed to the President of Iran.

The President also recalled his phone conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian after he became President and noted that various Azerbaijani government delegations have visited Iran since his election.

Shina Ansari highlighted the historical nature of the good relations between Azerbaijan and Iran.

During the conversation, joint projects on the Araz River, the construction of a hydroelectric power station, and environmental cooperation were discussed, with emphasis on the importance of the intergovernmental commission's work.

The North-South transport corridor and the joint cooperation between Azerbaijan, Russia, and Iran were also mentioned. The issue of ecological problems in the Caspian Sea and the decreasing water levels in the Caspian were addressed, stressing the need for cooperation between the bordering countries.

President Aliyev expressed concern over the environmental impact of Armenia's mining industry waste being dumped into the Araz River.

A discussion on various aspects of bilateral relations followed.
