Mikhaylov: U.S. strengthening presence in South Caucasus

Given the complex situation between the EU and the US, I am not surprised that part of the United States' military equipment will be moved to Armenia, a country friendly to the American regime.

Axar.az reports Russian political expert Yevgeny Mikhaylov stated this while commenting on reports about the transfer of US military equipment from Germany to a training ground in Armenia.

"Of course, the U.S. does not intend to completely leave the South Caucasus, despite Trump's statements that he has other priorities. With a foothold like Armenia, Trump will use it either to monitor Iran from Armenian territory or to launch an attack on Iran from there. So, the strengthening of U.S. capabilities in the South Caucasus is, in principle, an expected development.

Although I initially thought that with Trump's return, the U.S. would pay less attention to this region, the real question is different. Is this military buildup aimed specifically against Azerbaijan and Russia? Or is it a strategic move in preparation for a potential conflict with Iran? That is the big question.

I believe Moscow is closely monitoring the situation in any case. We are in constant contact with Washington, and it is unlikely that the U.S. will create a direct security threat in the South Caucasus in the near future. However, the U.S., like the Armenians, is unpredictable. So, we must be prepared for any scenario," the expert noted.

Mikhaylov also notes that Azerbaijan has allies in Turkey and Russia:

"It is quite clear that in such a situation, Washington is unlikely to support Armenia against Azerbaijan. This is merely about securing a foothold for the Americans in Armenia, which has now effectively become their only outpost in the South Caucasus. Georgia, meanwhile, is pursuing its own policies, primarily focused on strengthening its national interests.

Azerbaijan should approach Yerevan’s promises of a peace treaty with caution and negotiate from a position of strength. A strong state should not tolerate the whims of those who have already lost and those who are still resisting, despite being offered favorable terms for peace."
