NASA's X-59 completes US cross-country flight - Video

NASA's experimental X-59 quiet supersonic jet has completed a cross-country flight from California to Florida as part of a mission to make supersonic air travel over land quieter.

Axar.az reports, citing the US media, that the aircraft departed Edwards Air Force Base in California on October 28, one year after its maiden flight, and flew to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, stopping in Texas along the way.

Built by Lockheed Martin, the X-59 has completed more than 40 test flights and reached a top speed of Mach 1.53. Its design aims to replace the traditional explosive sonic boom with a quieter sonic thump of around 75 decibels.

The aircraft is designed to cruise at Mach 1.4 at an altitude of 55,000 feet. Its unusually long nose helps shape shockwaves, while a camera-based vision system allows the pilot to see ahead without a conventional front windshield.

As part of NASA's Quesst mission, the aircraft will fly over communities to measure noise levels on the ground and assess public reactions. The findings could help pave the way for lifting the 1973 ban on commercial supersonic flights over land.
