Georgia pays off 'historic debt' to Azerbaijan

Georgia has completed the repayment of its so-called "historic debt" to seven countries, including Azerbaijan.

Axar.az informs, according to Repоrt, citing the Georgian Ministry of Finance, in September 2025 Georgia fully settled the remaining external debt restructured in July 2004 under an agreement with Paris Club creditors.

In addition to Azerbaijan, the debts were paid off to Russia, Turkiye, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Iran, and the Netherlands.

All these debts stemmed from external obligations incurred during the first years after Georgia gained independence.

The repayments covered debts totaling $160 million, taken before 1999, interest on liabilities accumulated from 1999 to May 2004, and obligations scheduled for repayment in 2004–2006 under a previously approved plan.

The total amount of payments exceeded $225 million.

As of August 31, 2025, Georgia"s total external public debt stands at $9.1 billion.
