Elon Musk loses lawsuit against OpenAI

A jury in Oakland, California, has ruled that Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI is barred by the statute of limitations, delivering a major legal victory for the artificial intelligence company and its leadership.

Axar.az reports, citing CNN, the jury concluded that Musk filed his case too late and was aware of the issues in question as early as 2021.

The decision, issued after roughly 90 minutes of deliberation, will be reviewed by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who has indicated she is likely to align with the jury’s findings.

Musk had accused OpenAI of abandoning its original nonprofit mission and sought sweeping remedies, including reversing its corporate restructuring and recovering more than $130 billion for its nonprofit arm.

In court, Musk argued he was misled by the company’s evolution, saying, “I was a fool. I gave them free funding to create a startup.”

OpenAI’s defense countered that the company’s mission had not fundamentally changed and that Musk himself had once supported the idea of a for-profit structure. The jury sided with OpenAI, marking what one report described as “a landmark moment for the AI industry.”
