Peace negotiations involving Iran, the United States, and Pakistani mediators ended without an agreement after marathon talks in Islamabad, with both sides blaming each other for the failure to reach a breakthrough.
Axar.az reports that Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the discussions had ended without agreement, saying: “We’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That’s the good news. The bad news is we have not reached an agreement.”
Vance added that “So we go back to the United States, having not come to an agreement. We've made very clear what our red lines are, what things we're willing to accommodate them on and what things we're not willing to accommodate them on," Vance added. "And we've made that as clear as we possibly could, and they have chosen not to accept our terms.”
Vance also said that he remained in constant contact with President Donald Trump throughout the negotiations.
“I don’t know how many times we talked to him — a half dozen times, a dozen times over the past 21 hours.” He added that coordination extended across the U.S. administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, stating: “We were constantly in communication with the team because we were negotiating in good faith.”
However, Iranian officials presented a different account. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said the talks collapsed due to what it described as “unreasonable demands” from Washington. In a statement on Telegram, IRIB claimed: “The Iranian delegation negotiated continuously and intensively for 21 hours in order to protect the national interests of the Iranian people; despite various initiatives from the Iranian delegation, the unreasonable demands of the American side prevented the progress of the negotiations. Thus the negotiations ended.”
The talks, which lasted around 21 hours and involved senior officials from both sides, also included Pakistani mediation efforts. Despite extended discussions, Vance said, “We just could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms.”
Following the collapse of the negotiations, the U.S. delegation departed Islamabad without scheduling a follow-up meeting.
