Turkiye to tighten gun laws after school attacks

Turkiye will introduce stricter regulations on gun ownership and increase penalties for firearm holders.

Axar.az reports that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the measures following a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Complex.

“Our top priority is ensuring the security of our schools. There will be no concessions on this matter, and there will not be,” Erdogan said. “We will increase penalties against firearm owners who fail to fulfill their security and responsibility obligations. Additional legal regulations will also be introduced to restrict gun ownership.”

Erdogan also stated that the government will tighten oversight of firearm possession and develop broader legal frameworks and action plans in this area.

It should be noted that the decision comes after recent school attacks in Turkiye. On April 14, a shooting occurred in Shanliurfa, while on April 15 another attack took place in Kahramanmarash. In Kahramanmarash, an 8th-grade student killed nine people and injured 21 before taking his own life. In Shanliurfa, a student injured 19 people before committing suicide.
