New rules for compulsory military service have come into effect in Georgia starting from January 1.

Axar.az reports that now, conscripts will be sent only to military service referred to as "National Military Service."

The conscription process will be based on a random selection from the list of individuals aged 18-27 who are registered for military service, and it will take place by January 31.

Military service in Georgia will be paid and include vacation and rest days. The conscript can choose one of three service options for themselves.

It is reported that service in combat units will last 6 months, service in security and support units will last 8 months, and service for junior commanders and certain specializations will last 11 months.

The call-up for military service will be carried out in stages throughout the year. For instance, the call-up for combat units will begin on April 15.

The call-up for security and support units will be carried out in four stages: March 15, June 1, August 15, and November 1.

The call-up for junior commanders and specific specializations will begin on October 15.

According to the new rules, draftees will retain their previous jobs, and if they employed in a state institution, they will continue receiving their salaries. During their service, they will be granted rest days, and they will also have the opportunity to use public transportation for free.

The rules state that conscripts can request a one-time deferral, which will cost 5,000 lari, or approximately 2,000 dollars.

Furthermore, under this initiative, all religious confessions’ service members will undergo alternative service.

Students, if they wish, can choose a suitable option and attend an intensive course for one month once a year, or continuously, to receive a commission as an officer.
