It’s one of the biggest questions in the universe.

Now scientists have said there’s a ‘good chance’ that we may find alien life on Mars and discover whether we are alone in the universe. This game changing prediction was made by scientists working in the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth and an area that’s strikingly similar to Mars. They found that ‘specialized bacteria’ can spend decades lying dormant in the soil before coming back to life when there is a rain shower. If life can survive in this hostile environment, then it could survive on Mars.

‘It has always fascinated me to go to the places where people don’t think anything could possibly survive and discover that life has somehow found a way to make it work,’ said Washington State University planetary scientist Dirk Schulze-Makuch. ‘Jurassic Park references aside, our research tell us that if life can persist in Earth’s driest environment there is a good chance it could be hanging in there on Mars in a similar fashion.’ Nasa recently revealed the sad fate of a lonely spaceship which died during the freezing Mars winter almost a decade ago. The Phoenix probe spent three months on the Red Planet, before perishing in ‘dark and cold’ conditions it was never built to withstand.
