Iran is a part of India's North-South corridor. One of the partners in this transport route is Azerbaijan, and the other is Russia. Consequently, India is on the verge of becoming one of China's biggest rivals globally. Therefore, Iran's perspective on the Zangezur issue should be linked to its strategic partnership with India. Strengthening Iran's strategic ties with India hampers China's commercial significance in the region.

Axar.az reports that according to the Turkish analyst, Engin Ozar when commenting on Iran's concerns regarding the opening of the Zangezur corridor.

"Due to the disruption of communication through Russia caused by the Ukraine war, shipping costs in the sea route between Europe and China have significantly increased. This led to certain trade difficulties between the European Union and China. Currently, the Zangezur corridor remains the last option to connect Europe and China. Although the corridor would directly connect Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan, it holds greater significance globally. Because Iran's strategic cooperation with India squeezes China's economic ties in the region, the Tehran government does not view the opening of the Zangezur corridor positively. Iran is concerned that the opening of this corridor would increase China's commercial activities in the region, which is why it is unequivocally against it," Ozar added.

He noted that the strengthening of Turkiye and Azerbaijan in the region through the Zangezur corridor is of secondary importance to Iran.

"Establishing and facilitating communication among Turkic states pose a secondary threat to Iran. For Iran, cooperation between India and Armenia is more important. As you know, India has begun making significant investments in Iran. There could also be pressure from the New Delhi government on Iran regarding the Zangezur corridor. In this sense, Iran's real fear is not the strengthening of ties among Turkic states but the collapse of the strategic partnership it has built with India."
