The Shirvan Valley in the Sabalan mountain range, one of the prominent natural and tourism attractions of Ardabil Province, remains pending for UNESCO registration despite years of efforts.
Axar.az, citing IRNA, reports that officials say that if the designation is achieved, the area could become a major hub for eco-tourism and mountain recreation.
Located on the slopes of Mount Sabalan, Shirvan Valley is known for its unique geological formations and natural landscapes, making it a strong candidate for recognition as a geopark.
In 2008, the Ardabil Provincial Department of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism announced plans to register the site as Iran’s second geopark at UNESCO. However, the initiative has yet to materialize.
At the time, officials stated that complementary studies and documentation were underway to support the registration process. Following recognition, the site was expected to be promoted as one of the Middle East’s most exceptional geological attractions and developed as a geopark for visitors and nature enthusiasts.
Preparatory steps for the nomination have involved experts from cultural heritage, environmental protection, natural resources authorities, and tourism research institutions. Authorities have emphasized that the primary objective of pursuing global registration is to safeguard the region’s natural resources while strengthening the local economy through tourism development and related businesses.
Despite its proven ecological and geological significance, Shirvan Valley still awaits international recognition.
