One Canadian tests positive for hantavirus

A Canadian cruise passenger in British Columbia has tested “presumptive positive” for hantavirus following an outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius.

Axar.az reports, citing CBC, according to B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the patient developed mild symptoms, including fever and headache, and was hospitalized before testing “presumptive positive” for the virus.

The result is still pending confirmation from Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory.

“Clearly, this is not what we hoped for, but it is what we planned for,” Dr. Henry said, adding that the patient is being treated as infected.

She also emphasized that hantavirus is very different from respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 or influenza and “does not have pandemic potential.”

The patient is one of four Canadians who were placed in isolation after returning from the cruise ship, where multiple hantavirus cases were previously reported. Health authorities noted that all infection-control protocols were followed and that the risk to the general public remains low.

It is reported that the patient’s condition is currently stable and under medical supervision.
