Northern Cyprus bans outdoor work amid extreme heat

Unusually hot weather in Northern Cyprus has prompted new restrictions on outdoor work.

Axar.az reports, citing local media, that the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has banned outdoor work and activities under direct sunlight daily from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. until August 15 due to extreme heat.

The ministry said the measure was introduced in line with weather forecasts and is intended to protect workers from heat-related risks, including heatstroke and severe dehydration.

It also noted that employers, particularly in the agriculture and construction sectors, may bring forward working hours so work can be carried out during the cooler parts of the day.

The ministry urged employers and workers to fully comply with the restrictions, stressing that proper planning and occupational health and safety measures are essential during the period of extreme heat.

A similar restriction was in effect in the TRNC from July 22 to August 1, when temperatures in some areas reached 43°C (109.4°F).
