Some time ago, due to low precipitation and reduced annual water allocation from dams, Lake Urmia, which had slightly revived, completely dried up on September 17.
Axar.az reports that Iran’s "Etimad" newspaper has released information about this.
"This event not only exacerbates the region's ecological crisis but also poses a serious threat to the health of the 5 million people living in the areas surrounding the lake," the report states.
Previously, although ecologists had warned that Lake Urmia might completely dry up, relevant government agencies had claimed this was not true.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had previously stated that one of his main goals in the pre-election campaign was the restoration of Lake Urmia.
