ADR vice-president resigns over Facebook comments

The vice-president of Luxembourg's right-wing party ADR has resigned over comments she made on the foreign ministers' Facebook post on taking refugees from Niger.

Axar.az reports citing LT that Sylvie Mischel, vice-president of the Alternative Democratic Reform (ADR) party, hit out at foreign secretary Jean Asselborn who over the weekend had said that a total of 48 refugees were selected for resettlement in Luxembourg as part of an agreement with the United Nations refugee agency.

Mischel accused the government of not sufficiently assisting people in Luxembourg. "There is a lot of misery with people here but taking care of that does not seem to interest the Government," she said.

"We are giving them the opportunity to build a new life," Luxembourg’s foreign secretary Jean Asselborn said in his social media message about the issue. "And they give us the opportunity to show that Luxembourg is shouldering a small piece of this era's misery."

The executive committee said they have taken Mischel's decision with "recognition and respect".

Her Facebook comment has now been deleted.
