Experts have restored an ancient Greek fresco with the help of artificial intelligence.

Axar.az reports the ReVis project used non-invasive diagnostic and imaging techniques, including high-resolution photography, analysis, spectroscopic methods, and chemical scanning.

The Greek Ministry of Culture has completed the digital restoration of the hunting fresco from the tomb of Philip II in Vergina. The fresco, considered the largest and most important work of classical antiquity, has been reworked thanks to the development of digital technology.

The ReVis project is the first comprehensive and scientifically documented study of the frescoes in Aigai. The study used photographic techniques to reveal design details that are invisible to the naked eye. The team continued the search that began a decade ago in 2013, giving new life to the relic, which depicts an old man and a young man on horseback, possibly Philip II and Alexander the Great.

The digital reconstruction of the fresco combines art with science, including artificial intelligence tools developed by visual artist Christos Simotos and creative approaches presented by artist Emmanuel Bitsakis. The fresco, which is more than 5.5 meters long and is located in the frieze of the tomb of Philip II, was first discovered in 1977. Since then, the fresco, which depicts six hunting scenes of horsemen and foot hunters, has become an emblem of monumental Greek painting from the 4th century BC.

In April, the findings will be presented at a summit called "Interdisciplinary Research and Digital Reconstruction," which will be held at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.

The team of scientists is developing a plan to restore other ancient frescoes with the help of artificial intelligence. The method is said to be used in other countries with traces of Hellenistic culture.
